Originally from Pennsylvania, Janet McCaskill earned her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, her Master of Music in Tuba Performance and Wind Band Conducting from Arkansas State University and has complete the coursework requirements for the PhD in Music Education with emphasis areas in Wind Band Conducting and Tuba Pedagogy from the University of Missouri—Columbia.  Her primary conducting teachers have been Jack Stamp and Tom O’Neal.  Her primary tuba teachers have been Gary Bird, Bill Holmes and Angelo Manzo.

Her playing experience includes concert bands, jazz bands, dixieland combos, brass quintet, orchestras, chamber and solo recitals.  Most recently she served as an assistant producer on the University of Missouri’s CD project.  Research interests include the study of figurative language in instrumental rehearsals and non-verbal communication.
 
Professor McCaskill will be the conductor of the Marching Mavs, UNO’s marching ensemble, the University Band and will teach courses in the music education curriculum.  Additionally, she will serve as the sponsor/advisor of the Kappa Kappa Psi chapter at UNO.  She is a member of MENC, CBDNA, WASBE, NSBA, Pi Kappa Lambda and ITEA, an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma, and has served as the Patroness of the Sigma Alpha Iota chapter at the University of Missouri—Columbia. 

Janet currently resides in Omaha with her husband, Mark and their dog Brooke.
