FLUTE STUDENTS AT UNO

Flute students come to UNO from all over the state of Nebraska as well as from outside the state. No matter what your background, you'll feel like you're at home as a member of the UNO flute studio!

Congratulations to UNO flutist Taurice Alexander who was selected through a national audition to the National Intercollegiate Band in Orlando, FL which will take place in July 2007.

Congratulations to UNO flutists Anna Hall and Erika Jeck who were both selected through a national audition to perform on the collegiate masterclass at the 2007 MidSouth Flute Society Flute Festival!
Both Anna and Erika performed on a public master class for master flutist and teacher Jim Walker during the MFS festival on March 24 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

MEET THE CURRENT FLUTE STUDENTS AT UNO

GRADUATE STUDENTS (MM)

Holly Robbins is a master's degree student in Flute Performance from Columbus, GA. She received her BME from Columbus State University in May 2007. At UNO, she plays 2nd flute in the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra, principal flute in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and also participates on the Heartland Community Flute Choir.

 

 

Sara Schuhardt is a master's degree student in Flute Performance from IA. She received her BME from Buena Vista University in 2008. (Photo soon!)

Carolyn Weston is a master's degree student in Music Education major from Junietta, NE. The assistant director of bands at Auburn HS/JH, she received her Bachelor of Music/Education degree from UNO in 2007. Carolyn plays in the Heartland Community Flute Choir and has performed in master classes for Hannah Lang and Joe Bonner.

 

 

SENIORS

Erica Jeck is a senior History major (flute minor) from Omaha, NE. Previously a flutist in the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra (OAYO) and an All-State member, she now plays in the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra (piccolo), BF3 Flute Trio, and the Heartland Community Flute Choir. She has performed in master classes for Jim Walker, Thomas Robertello, Marcia Kamper, and Nicole Esposito. The winner of the 2008 UNO Concerto-Aria competition, she will perform Lowell Liebermann's Piccolo Concerto, Op. 50 with the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra during the 2008-2009 academic year.

 

Catherine Bone is a senior Music Education major. She plays in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Heartland Community Flute Choir, Chamber Orchestra, and the Marching Mavericks. She has performed in master classes with Nicole Esposito and Joe Bonner.

 


JUNIORS

Chirstina Millard is a junior Music Education major from Omaha where she graduated from Millard Public Schools. She is a member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and is Color Guard Captain of the Marching Mavericks. She has performed in a master class with Marcia Kamper.

 

 

SOPHOMORES

FLUTE STUDIO RECITALS

Flute students at UNO learn a variety of works during their course of study, encompassing almost every style and genre in the flute repertoire. Each fall, students perform a work they have studied that semester in a formal studio recital. In the spring semester, the annual "Piccolopalooza" concert is held on which students perform works studied on piccolo. DR. BEARD'S PRIVATE FLUTE STUDIO

Dr. Beard accepts high school and middle school students for private study by audition. She also accepts adult students at all levels (no audition required). Her rates for 2007-2008 are $40/hour lesson or $25/30 minute lesson. Limited spots are available, and the studio fills up quickly. UNO Flute Studio ALUMNI..."THEN and NOW"

Taurice Alexander graduated from UNO in 2008 with her Bachelor of Music degree in education. A native of Sioux City, IA, she was a member of the Heartland Philharmonic Orchetsra, Symhonic Wind Ensemble, Heartland Community Flute Choir, Marching Band (section leader), and BF3 Flute Trio. Taurice will start her new position as Director of Bands at Homer HS beginning in the fall of 2008.

Anna Hall graduated from UNO in 2008 with her Bachelor of Music degree in education. Anna played in several ensembles at UNO, including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble (principal), Marching Band, Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra (principal), the UNO Woodwind Quartet, BF3 Flute Trio, and Heartland Community Flute Choir. Anna will attend graduate school to pursue a MM in flute performance at the University of Iowa in the fall 2008, where she received a graduate research fellowship.

Cindy Bassett McGann is a 2004 graduate of UNO where she was awarded a Master of Music degree in flute performance. While at UNO, she played principal flute in the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra, 2nd flute/piccolo for the Lincoln Symphony, substitute flute/piccolo for the Omaha Symphony, and served as Assistant Director of the Heartland Community Flute Choir. She also held the Music Theory Teaching Assistantship at UNO from 2003-2004. Her many accomplishments include acceptance to the Julius Baker Summer Masterclass in 2003 and winning the UNO Concerto Competition in 2004. A mother of 5 and grandmother of 4, Cindy also holds a Juris Doctorate from Creighton University.

Carmen Campbell is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She works in the Omaha Public School District teaching elementary music, and continues to perform as a member of the Heartland Community Flute Choir. In the summer of 2004, Carmen began graduate work in Music Education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She continues to study flute with Dr. Beard.

Sarah Aschenbrenner is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and is now employed in Nebraska teaching middle school band/music in a private school district. She also plays principal flute in the Nebraska Wind Symphony.

Tina Stevens is a 2003 graduate of UNO with Bachelor of Music Education degree. A mother of 2 small children, she is currently employed in Nebraska teaching middle school/elementary music.

Kris Stubbe is a 2003 graduate of UNO with Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. After graduation, she continued her education at UNO as a Masters degree student in Business which she completed in 2004.

Leslie McQueen is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. After graduation, she moved to Florida with her husband where he is pursuing a Masters degree in piano.

Zachary Fowler ('Zac') ia a December 2003 graduate of UNO, Zac holds degrees in Computer Science and Spanish. While a student, Zac played flute during concert season and trumpet during marching season. He is currently employed by UNO.

Kristi Enyart (Cooper) is a 2002 Graduate of UNO with a Master of Music degree in woodwind performance. She currently works as Program Director at KVNO radio, performs on oboe with the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra and the Omaha Municipal Orchestra, and does freelance work in and around Omaha.

Tina M. Shogrin (formerly Tina Tassone) is a 1991 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree. Since graduating, Tina continued working at the Strategic Air & Space Museum while teaching private flute and piano students in her spare time. Since becoming a mom in 2004, Tina has left the Museum to work for the Omaha Performing Arts Society and is attempting to repopulate her flute studio. Tina has been performing with the Omaha Municipal Orchestra for the last five years and continues to do free lance work in and around the Omaha area.

Betsy Kallstrom is a 1975 Graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She worked as a band director at Bennington Public Schools for 15 years, but now maintains a private flute studio and stays active in the music community as an adjudicator and clinician. She performs with the Nebraska Wind Symphony, the Blair Area Community Band, and the Heartland Community Flute Choir. Betsy serves as Director of the Chancel Ringers Handbell Choir at St. Luke UMC where she also sings in the choir.
