Archives 2005-2006
- Dr.
Christine Beard was invited to be the featured piccolo soloist
at the International Wind Music History and Vintage Brass Music Festival
held in Northfield, MN in July 2006. During the conference, Dr. Beard
performed "Kinloch O' Kinloch" by J. Occa on two concerts
with Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band, and she gave a lecture entitled
"The Solo Piccolo in the 19th Century."
- In September,
three UNO faculty were accepted to perform/present at the 2006 College
Music Society National Convention in San Antonio, TX: Dr.
Pete Madsen will be performing on several CMS composer's concerts
as a member of the Continental Trombone Quartet; Dr.
Christine Beard will perform a work for solo flute on a CMS
composer's concert and will also be giving a lecture-performance on
Latin-American music for flute and oboe; and Professor
Barry Ford will have one of his own compositions performed
by the Continental Trombone Quartet.
- Michael Pollock,
a master's student in percussion and currently serving as the Percussion
Teaching Assistant, was named one of only two "Outstanding
Graduate Students" by UNO for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Mike is the first music student to be given this award in its history.
- The BF3 flute
trio (Anna Hall, Taurice Alexander, and Erika Jeck,
assisted by James Barnett, piano) was named 1st Runner Up in
the state level of the MTNA Collegiate Chamber Competition.
Their program included works by Hovhaness, Musgrave, Kummer, and Telemann.
- Anthony
Trecek-King,
Assistant Professor of Music, was selected as a Conducting Fellow
to attend the 2005 Eric Ericson Master Class in Haarlem, Netherlands,
where he will conduct the Netherlands Chamber Chorus and the Netherlands
Radio Chorus. In the fall of 2005, Trecek-King will travel to Braunschweig,
Germany, to conduct and lecture at the Technische Universität
Braunschweig, where he was selected as the first recipient of the
Jochen Litterst Visiting Professor Fellowship for young faculty.
- Dr.
Christopher Stanichar and Dr.
Christine Beard completed a concert tour in southern Russia
in May 2005, including performances with the Mineralnye Vody Festival
Orchestra, Krasnodar Chamber Orchestra, and the Sochi Philharmonic
Orchestra. Stanichar, Director of Orchestras at UNO, served as conductor
for the performances, while Beard, Professor of Flute at UNO, performed
as a concerto soloist. Both were awarded mini-grants from the UNO
University Committee on Research to assit with expenses related to
the tour.
- Dr.
Pete Madsen was chosen to perform at
the College Music Society International Conference in Spain
(Summer 2005).

2005
- Nathaniel
Roper, Choral GTA, has accepted a choral director position at
Aspen Academy HS in Georgia to begin in the 2005-2006 academic year.
- Michael
Beard, Band GTA, has been awarded a graduate teaching assistantship
at the University of Memphis where he will begin a DMA program in
Wind Conducting in the 2005-2006 academic year.
- Jonathon
Pinkerton, Jazz GTA, has accepted a band director position in
Millersville, PA to begin in the 2005-2006 academic year.
APRIL
2005
- Junior Music
Ed. (trumpet) major Zac Konrad was chosen as the receipient
of the 2004-2005 Presser Scholar.
- The UNO
Jazz Combo was selected to perform at the IAJE
Regional Conference in Chicago.
- UNO pianist
Jordan Ellsberry won the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Young
Artist Competition.
- Jules DeSalvo,
Junior Music Ed. (euphonium) major, won the MTNA Student Chapter
Composition Competition.
- Outstanding
Graduating Senior Awards were presented to Gordon Roberts
(Senior Music Ed.) and Tim Hillier (Senior Music Performance)
at the Honors Convocation.
- The 1st
Annual UNO Honors Recital was held on April 10, 2005. Students
with a minimum 3.0 GPA were selected by audition to perform on the
recital which was held in conjunction with Honors Week at UNO. The
following solos and/or ensembles were selected to this year's recital:
Christina Allred, cello; Javier Castellote, guitar; Soonyoung
Hwang, piano and voice; Dennis McNulty, piano; Andrew Norris, clarinet;
Scott Shinbara, marimba; S. Michael Shuman, piano; Mike Pollock,
Jason Domonkos, Nick Romero, and Alex Wimmer, percussion ensemble.

Convention of the Association of Concert Band is IL.

James Johnson was named a MTNA Foundation Fellow
at the annual convention in Seattle (April 2005).

- UNO
Marching Mavericks selected to represent the state of Nebraska
in the 55th Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington,

and graduate vocal majors from UNO received honors at the NATS
competition:

- Senior trombome
major Shanna Olney won the CMENC audition to represent UNO

SUMMER
2004
- The UNO Symphonic
Wind Ensemble completed an 18-day European Concert Tour.
The ensemble performed at Omaha Beach on 60th Anniversary Commemoration
of the D-Day Landings on June 6, and also included concerts in Naas,
Ireland; London, England; and Paris, France.
- Summer honors
for two UNO guitar students: James Lowe was accepted to study
at the Christopher Parkerning
Guitar Master Class; Peter Vonk was accepted for
study at the master class with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
(LAGQ).

2004
- The 1st annual
Flute Olympics &
Flute Festival was held at UNO feautring guest artist Brooks
deWetter-Smith (UNC/Chapel Hill). Over 50 flutists from 4 states
and a dozen exhibitors from across the U.S. were on campus for the
event co-sponsored by UNO, the Nebraska Flute Club, and the Gemeinhardt
Flute Co., Llc.
MARCH
2004
- Congratulations
to the winners of the 2004 UNO Concerto Competition: flutist
Cindy McGann, with Rodrigo's Concierto Pastorale; guitarist
Colin Holtz with Villa-Lobos' Guitar Concerto No.2; and pianist
Jamie Schuh with Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
- The UNO
Wind Ensemble was selected to perfrom at the 2004 NSBMA Convention
held in Lincoln, NE.
JANUARY
2004
- Dr.
Erica Neidlinger was named the new director of the Nebraska
Wind Symphony.
- MM flute student
Cindy McGann wins the Lincoln Symphony Second Flute/Piccolo
Audition on 1/18/04.
OCTOBER
2003
- Dr.
Tomm Roland, Asst. Professor of Percussion,
was named an endorser and Education Artist for Vic
Firth sticks and mallets. During the month of October, he
will be on tour giving clinics/performances at several college campuses
including: Southern Oregon University (10/21), Portland State University
(10/23), and Boise State University (10/24).
- Percussionist
Josh Austin won the state MTNA Young Artist Soloist Competition
and advanced to compete at the NMTA West Central Division Young
Artist Competition in Boulder, CO.
SEPTEMBER
2003
- Christine
Beard, Instructor of Flute, performed a guest artist recital
with percussionist Dr.
Paul Bissell (Del Mar College) at the University of Nebraska
at Lincoln featuring "Solo and Chamber Works for Flute
& Percussion Since 1980."
- The UNO Music
Department and the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band presented
a lecture and masterclass by Vincent
Cichowicz, former trumpet player in the Chicago Symphony
and Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
AUGUST
2003
- MM flute student
Cindy McGann was accepted to perform and study at the Julius
Baker Master Class at Western Connecticut State Univeristy
August 2-7. In addition to studying with the legendary Julius Baker
(one of the last to have this honor before he passed away on 8/7),
Cindy also worked with Bradley Garner, Nobataku Shimizu, and others.
