Music Theory

The Creation of new music is an important aspect of the Department of Music. A curriculum that includes the basics of a wide variety of styles of music is offered to students who wish to participate as a composition major, a composition minor, or for personal enrichment as part of another degree track. Both the major and the minor in composition are available to students.

Emphasis on individual instruction is a special feature of the program. This commitment by the faculty allows the student to focus on personal talents and interests while at the same time develop the craft of musical composition within the context of the creation of art.

Students are afforded several venues to hear their original works performed by the University Ensembles and by soloists and chamber groups. Several award-winning faculty members compose and arrange in a wide variety of idioms including choral music, music for large ensembles, and jazz.
